Clay Jug

by deadheaduk @ Friday, 23. Sep, 2005 - 23:02:41

The line I mentioned in my previous post as being from a Jackie Leven song was of course written by Kabir (Couldn't remember the name when I was at work). I've re-printed the poem below:

Inside this clay jug there are canyons and pine mountains,
and the maker of canyons and pine mountains!
All seven oceans are inside, and hundreds of millions of stars.
The acid that tests gold is there, and the one who judges jewels.
And the music from the strings that no one touches,
and the source of all water.

If you want the truth, I will tell you the truth:
Friend, listen: the God whom I love is inside.

It was translated by Robert Bly - writer of Iron John which I still haven't finished and he reads the poem on the Jackie Leven CD which is called "The Mystery Of Love Is Greater Than The Mystery Of Death" which in inself is a thought provking statement. Jackie used to be in Doll by Doll who I saw a couple of times - once on the same bill at Gateshead Stadium as an up and coming band called U2. I've seen Jackie a couple of times at the 12 Bar club in London and at the Tron in Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections in 2003.

How's that Phil?

My man, you are a genius. I too remember U2 as a DBD support band. And you tell the young people that today, and they don't believe you !

When I was at university we had U2 booked to support the Radio 1 roadshow with Richard Skinner but they pulled out and we got the Polecats instead. The Polecats were also on at Gateshead that day. Headliners were Ian Dury and Elvis Costello. I found the program the other month and it's signed by all four members of U2.

We did get U2 at Salford Uni on the next tour by way of apologising for not turning up the first time. I did front of house security and watched the band from the organ pit in the middle of the stage.

As for being a genius - it is something I've always suspected ;-)

Larry Mullen still has one of my U2 badges, which he borrowed back off me outside the Marquee to prove that he was, in fact, a member of the band... Don't get me onto Bono in Aylesbury Market Square.

And we did it - didn't take that many tags after all !

Yeah, genius.

Last time I saw U2 was at Manchester Apollo while I was at Uni. My brother had got tickets and had been going on about it for ages.

On the day of the show my mate brian asked me if I fancied going to see U2. Oh yeah I said like we stand a chance. Ah, he said, but the Alarm are supporting them and I'm sure they'll get us on the guest list.

So we went down to the Apollo and when the Alarm turned up they remembered us from the times they had played at Salford and got us in for the soundcheck and onto the guest list for the night.

So when my brother turned up that night the first thing he saw as he went through the door was me with a guest pass and Bono's autograph on my bag!!

So what happened in Aylesbury?
