The return of the Sun

by deadheaduk @ Wednesday, 21. Dec, 2005 - 13:30:14

Return of the Sun King

Now is the solstice of the year,
winter is the glad song that you hear
Ring out these bells
Ring out, ring solstice bells
Ring solstice bells

Today is Yule or the Winter Solstice - after today the sun will climb a little higher in the sky each day and the days will get longer. Time to celebrate the rebirth of the Sun King, the Giver of Life that warms the frozen Earth, a time to look forward and make plans for the year ahead.

I think this is one of my favourite celebrations of the year!

Thanks for reminding us. Heard on the radio today that more than 24,000 people applied to visit the "Irish Stonehenge" at Newgrange, although only fifty people can fit into the chamber when it fills with light on the shortest day of the year. Not all of those have a good view and it depends on the weather!

I've always wanted to go to Maeshowe on Orkney to see the Midwinter alignment there.

Your mention of Orkney eventually led to my header picture so - thanks!

Wishing you the perfect Christmas - on your terms, according to your own wishes, and definition of happiness.

Great Link!

Thanks for the reminder of a song I've not listened to in ages.

Ahh my spirits lift in a way that Christmas can never evoke. Yes Orkney would be nice. It's odd I've always seen December through January as a time for reflection and taking stock - a time which the fakery of Christmas breaks into - so may this be a joyful time of renewal for you.

OK I give up. What is the JT song?

It's called (I think, and unsurprisingly) "Ring Out Solstice Bells." That said, I have tonight searched my Jethro Tull archive and find I have no copy of it.

Still, I don't suppose HH the Pope would have approved of such pagan sentiments...

(BTW, did they *have* bells in the Old Religion ?)

Dear philsimmons

I went out today and purchased 'Songs From The Wood' and, because it was there 'The Jethro Tull Christmas Album'. That last title together with the fact that thse are both 'cds'
Vinyl only shipped to me these days, leads me to wonder - can I bill you?

Sincerely

K N Hatton

:-) L O B LOUD!

Have a wondrous midnight Mass and a happy Christmas - and if you light candles - light one for your agrreable Buddhist ?

(I was a Baptist church member for 8 years and did theology under Rome for 3 so . . . . I do know what this time of year might mean for you.

Blessings
!

I'm going to have to dive into my Tull archive. The words are so familiar and yet the tune completely escapes me. Dunno about The Pope, haven't been in communion with RC for many many years but can enjoy a good mass/communion. Which 'Old Religion'? Catholocism had them, Orthodoxy has many and then some. Buddhism has many different types and I suspect paganism must have something thats dings or dongs - I mean - wouldn't be a religion would it wivout yer bells? . . . .Tambourines?

AhA ! I cried as I found it on 'Songs from The Wood'. Thanks. God the memories when I also found the original Standup which I was SURE I had sold and the odd but delightful Nicky Hopkins Solo 'The Tin Man Was A Dreamer'. I KNOW this is going to be an LP day - when I've had all my teeth out. (I won't sing along)

I THOUGHT it would be on 'Minstrel In The Gallery'.

Songs from the Wood is my favourite Tull album. Velvet Green is my favourite Tull song. :-)

One dusky half-hour's ride up to the north.
There lies your reputation and all that you're worth.

The most subtle song about shagging ever. :-)

I wish you - in every sense - a beautiful, happy and (if the force is with you) most erotic Christmas you could wish for yourself
