The Sun is eclipsed by the moon

eclipse

Did you see the eclipse yesterday?

You be forgiven for not noticing it as it was only a partial one and the moon only took a small chunk out of the sun.

I tried to look for the solar viewers I had bought for the total eclipse in 1999 which had sat unused in my desk drawer since we'd got back but I couldn't find them - bugger. So I had to content myself with quick glances at the sun and then being almost blind for five minutes afterwards!

I saw the full eclipse at Plymouth in 1999. Unfortunately it was cloudy, nevertheless the event was still spectacular, especially the behaviour of the birds and the appearance of a strange mist that briefly formed out at sea.

We were in Cornwall and again we never saw the sun but I agree I wouldn't have swapped totality for a 99% eclipse elsewhere. The link in the original blog entry takes you to an account of my experience.

How lovely to read your account of the 1999 eclipse, I wish I had the sense (like you did) to write down my experience at the time.
We went on a cheap 4 day coach trip to Strasbourg, France, on my daughter's 16th birthday, incorporating the eclipse and experienced it standing on a medieval bridge looking down the river... Awesome!

After the eclipse we wished we'd gone to France but there was something about seeing the eclipse on UK soil. Also Ken Kesey was down in Cornwall with his bus.

I've added the picture I took of the recent eclipse now I'm home again.
