It was interesting to read in the papers over the last three very wet days several articles about the "drought" and climate change. There are apparently flood warnings issued alongside the hosepipe bans at the moment.
One article said that water companies blamed the lack of water in the south east on the effects of climate change which means it can rain heavily in the north and there be a surplus of water but not in the south which is why there are water shortages.
So nothing to do with massive water losses through leaks then - apparently a third of the water in London is lost due to leaks. And nothing to do with massive under investment over many years which meant that while the population has grown the water supply hasn't. Also if there is ample water in other parts of the country why can't we pipe it to the south where demand is higher - after all we pipe oil and gas from the continent so why can't we pipe water from Scotland?
Also in the news this week was the fact that old Ken Livingstone had blocked plans for a massive de-salination plant to serve London by turning sea water into drinking water. The reasons he gave were that they should do more to stop leaks and that it would create a huge amount of greenhouse gases. Obviously the water company were up in arms about this and a spokesman criticized the decision - obviously a different spokesman to the one who blamed the shortages on climate change then!!
And still it rains....
