I believe in miracles

by deadheaduk @ Saturday, 30. Sep, 2006 - 23:21:37

"Won't somebody help me praise him?"

I've spent the day working for a famous TV evangelist - during which miracles happened right in front of my eyes. Those suffering from cancer were cured, the lame were healed and threw away their crutches. Those in need were told to expect money to flow into their lives.

All in Jesus' name. One thing I noticed though was that although he kept promising to share the word of the Lord with us, quotations from the bible were on the whole noticeable by their absence. To me this was fine because as far as I am concerned this has nothing to do with Christianity.

If you are faithful to God he'll give you a cadillac!

The one time he did reach for the good book it was simply to use the quote to encourage the faithful to put their hands in their pockets! Apparently your salvation could be bought for the bargain price of £76 and God even takes credit cards!

I know that many people take issue with this type of evangelical style of preaching and I can see why. Firstly it all seemed to be about the pursuit of money which to me doesn't sit well with Christian teachings. Secondly the healing methods gave me serious worries. Telling people to throw away their crutches because they are healed is one thing, telling them God has cured their cancer is quite another.

Looking at the audience to see who would believe in this stuff made me think it was the bungled and the botched. They are vulnerable and desperate people most of who could probably ill afford to give the kinds of sums being asked for.

They had people come on stage and give testimonies. One person said that God had put £7500 into their account and that they had been summoned to court to have their house repossessed. However she had trusted in God and not gone and the court case had been cancelled! This was greated with cheers but I can't help thinking she was deluded. I suspect the court case has been postponed rather than cancelled and anyway if God had put money in her account why didn't she use the money to pay off her arrears?

The whole experience left me feeling uneasy - probably more so than any other event I've ever been involved in - and in my time I've done events for Banks, advertising agencies, cigarette companies etc.

You do get some "fun" jobs.

I shake my head in disbelief..the vulnerable should be protected and NOT fleeced.
